The melody for “Greensleeves” was probably written in the late 16th century ( probably in Italy). The song became a real hit in England around 1600 and was so well known that Shakespeare even mentioned it in sayings of Lady Ford and Falstaff in his play “The Merry Women of Windsor”. Since that time, many composers have written variations to the song throughout the centuries. Now 15 more are joined in a duet for two alto recorders with E-foot by Philipp Spätling.
